Although it displaced 4.9 liters, this is the motor that became known as the “5.0” engine that was in the Shelby GT’s. The Mustang, once again bringing the attention and spotlight, made a name for the 302 when Ford started production of its Boss Mustang in 19, which featured the company’s top-performing 302 engine. This long-lasting engine, due to its high nickel content within the engine block, not only made a lasting impression in the car industry, but it also had an impressive 27-year run with Ford from 1968 until 1995. The 302 small-block and its predecessor, the 289, differed little except for the stroke, measuring at three inches. This engine was replaced in 1968 by the 302. This Mustang had a custom-built, race-ready 289 block engine that delivered a whopping 306 horsepower. But it wasn’t until 1965, when car enthusiast and builder, Carrol Shelby built a Mustang geared toward racing: the legendary Shelby GT350. The motor went under another upgrade when Ford released its HiPo, or High-Performance, model. Ford designed this unit to be an entry-level V8 for all models and originally featured 221 horsepower, which later upgraded to 271. This small-block displaced 289 cubic inches and came with a two-barrel carburetor with the option to have a four-barrel. In 1963, Ford launched it’s 289 CID, 4.7-liter V8 engine.
